About Us

Thank you for your interest in Authentic Period Homes, Inc! We are passionate about building custom homes and outdoor rooms with roots in the romantic period of architecture. The older homes in Asheville (Biltmore Forest, Montford, Kenilworth, Grove Park etc.) have a level of detail and quality rarely being achieved anymore. Our goal is to recreate this charm for your custom home. Timeless elegance built “like they used to”.

We feel that building someone’s dream residence should be a fun adventure for the client. We stay in constant touch and work closely with our clients to ensure we are meeting their every need. We are quite accustomed to working with clients from out of town and have done so quite effectively via smart phones and internet limiting the need for site visits. We have had clients as far away as Chicago that were very pleased with our process.

We built our first home in 1992 but did not enter the high end market until 1998 when we were accepted into the preferred builder program at the world renowned Chateau Elan Resort and Spa just north of Atlanta Georgia. We built both custom and speculative homes there and around Atlanta ranging from 3,000 sq feet to over 20,000 sq ft. We developed a wonderful client base some of which built multiple homes with us.

Apparently we impressed our developer as he asked us to build his personal house in Highlands NC. This home spawned more homes in the Highlands area and was our first step toward moving back to the mountains.

Having been born and raised here in Asheville with strong family ties to the community we moved back home in 2007 to be a part of the local luxury homebuilding market.

After we returned, we started a “design build” project creating the first authentic tudor home built in the mountains in close to 100 years. It featured the items below and more images are shown on our homepage.

360,000 pounds of granite
Cypress timbers, so many that we depleted the supply in North Carolina
and had to have more imported from Louisiana
32,000 bricks in herringbone and other intricate patterns
32’ tall great hall with oak beams
12’ oak judges paneling
Custom trim profiles throughout the house
Custom cast fireplace mantle featuring a quatrefoil design.
Antique and custom light fixtures from Canada and Europe

This home has been referred to as as a “Tudor Revival Masterpiece” and won a “Gold” craftsman award for construction excellence in the Asheville Parade of Homes. For this competition we were judged by the best builders out of Charlotte. Their comments included “perfect” and "stunning".

We then went on to win the “Custom Home of the Year, Old World” award in the national “Dream Home Awards” competition. The Dream Home Awards choose each year to recognize firms across the country who set new standards of excellence within the nations building industry. Winning projects are published in Hab-i-ta-tion magazine.

We recently won the PACE "Best Single Family Home" award for our  "Dogwood" design/build featured on our homepage. We are very proud of how this project turned out! It lives quite large for a modest sized home and is a good example of combining period design on the outside with a more modern twist on the inside.

You will see many pictures of larger homes on our “portfolio” page but this is not all we do. With the burst of the housing bubble the size of the projects are understandably smaller. The size of the project does not however change our commitment to quality and attention to detail.
